World Environment Day and Volunteer Day

Today (5 June 2020) is World Environment Day and Monday will be South Australian Volunteers Day.

Both of these occasions are timely reminders to acknowledge the work of staff, as well as that of our more than 5,000  volunteers across the state, and all that we do together to sustain South Australia’s unique and special environment and support the thousands of visitors that visit our parks and gardens throughout the year.

Our business is diverse.  We look after South Australia’s botanic gardens, natural parks and reserves, heritage and beaches, and we also have responsibility for climate change planning, water and coastal management, as well as nature-based tourism experiences and much more.

Our partnership with volunteers is vital to manage and deliver our wide-ranging conservation work and to enable South Australia to conserve, sustain and prosper, particularly as we work with communities to support bushfire recovery.  I would like to recognise our volunteers and their outstanding generosity and contribution in support of South Australia’s environment.

The State Government will formally recognise the important contribution of volunteers to the state’s economy and wellbeing, by hosting a COVID-safe virtual volunteer awards ceremony on Monday 8 June 2020. You can find out more by visiting the Department of Human Services website.

I hope you may also find local ways to celebrate the efforts of volunteers who contribute to your  program outcomes.

Thank you again to each of you for your own commitment to the conservation of all of our state’s wonderful natural assets.

Take care,
John Schutz
Chief Executive
Department of Environment and Water
