Koonamore Vegetation Reserve, officially the TGB Osborn Vegetation Reserve, located in South Australia’s north-east pastoral region, is internationally recognised as the longest-running vegetation monitoring project of its kind in Australia. Since 1925, a 4 km² area has been protected from sheep and rabbit grazing, creating a rare opportunity to see how arid landscapes function when introduced grazers are removed. Permanent plots and photo-points reveal dramatic changes in vegetation over the past century.
Adelaide University owns and manages the reserve and continues its long-term vegetation surveys. Please note the reserve is no public access unless arranged through the Friends of Koonamore Reserve activities. The newly formed Friends of Koonamore Reserve group aims to broaden participation beyond the university and support the reserve’s future care. Our main activities include maintaining fencing, supporting pest animal control, and helping establish new fauna monitoring programs such as bird surveys.
Most importantly, we offer opportunities for people to experience the arid zone and this unique reserve firsthand. Whether you are a local resident, conservation volunteer, student, or simply curious about arid landscapes, we welcome you to join us!
