Conservation Volunteers Australia has established a bushfire recovery volunteer database, aiming to match volunteers with organisations who need volunteer support.

If your organisation would like to put the call out to the list of over 11,000 people who are keen to volunteer for bushfire recovery, simply follow this link and register. Once registered, we can list your opportunities to the volunteers.

REGISTER NOW

Registration is quick and easy. We are here to help if you would like any assistance with the online form and, where needed, we can assist in training your organisation to help you manage volunteers safely.

With the cooler months upon us and recent bushfire recovery funding opportunities opening up, now is the time to get the word out about your recovery activities. We accept a wide range of projects and events occurring in directly affected zones, as well as nearby regions, including areas that act as refuge habitats. We also welcome online and citizen science projects that can aid environmental recovery.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch, on jmiller@cva.org.au or +61 437 477 627.

Per hectare, seagrasses can store up to twice as much carbon than terrestrial forests and play an important role in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. There are potential long term blue carbon opportunities in seagrass restoration.

DEW’s Blue Carbon Strategy for South Australia, released in November 2019, is accelerating action to protect and restore coastal ecosystems. Blue carbon reduces greenhouse gas emissions and facilitates social, economic and environmental co-benefits along the coast.

In collaboration with Flinders University and the South Australian Research and Development Institute, DEW is making progress to restore seagrass meadows off the Adelaide coast.

Work is currently underway to deploy some 50,000 hessian bags of sand into the ocean of the South Australian coastline to restore around 10 hectares of seagrass on the ocean floor.

For more information contact Director Climate Change, Coasts and Marine Neil McFarlane.

This week, our state was confronted with another summer bushfire. With last year’s bushfires still fresh in our minds, the Cherry Gardens bushfire made us hold a collective breath.

Thankfully, the fires were controlled with a huge effort from emergency services and volunteers, as well as much needed heavy rain. No lives were lost in these fires, though some homes and buildings were destroyed as well as around 3,000 hectares of scrub and grassland, critical habitat for our precious wildlife.

As with the Kangaroo Island bushfires, a planned and methodical environmental restoration at a landscape-scale will be required to give our native species a chance to survive and thrive again.

And you can help. The Wildlife Recovery Fund was established as a partnership between National Parks and Wildlife Service and Nature Foundation SA to directly fund local landholders, Landcare, Friends and community groups in fire affected regions to undertake native plantings, feral animal and weed control, and fencing – this will give both threatened animal and plant life the best chance of recovery.
